A Workspace of My Own

As the renovations wind down, Mum transitions from writing at the kitchen table to creating a dedicated, cozy writing corner. The house becomes a creative sanctuary as the teenagers play the self-taught piano and Ariadne joins in the music.

Diary Entry: Tuesday Zen level: Inspired, grounded, and surrounded by music Chapters written: 1 1/2 pages (written at my beautiful new desk!) Current status: Sitting at a wooden desk under a glowing lamp, surrounded by fresh plants

For the past month, my children’s book and journal writing has happened in short, frantic bursts at the busy kitchen table, balanced between paintbrushes, grocery lists, and flour. But today, I took a deep, happy breath and created a dedicated workspace of my own. It is a small, quiet alcove near the window just beyond our living room with a window facing the woods, large enough for a mahagony wooden desk, a comfortable beech rattan chair, a glowing brass lamp, and several fresh green plants and fragrant candles we bought from the local garden center. And of course my books and stationary as well as paint supplies. A bookcase which was fitted into the wall was now filled with all my wonderful books of self help, mindfulness, yoga, books of my many interests including Atlantis, the Pyramids, Philosophy and many more filled the bookshelves waiting to be read.

While I sat researching sensory-friendly activities on my phone and typing up new story ideas, the teenagers were busy at the other side of the room. We have an old upright piano, and the kids have been teaching themselves to play using internet tutorials. Farhaan was busy practicing a new song, his fingers finding the chords with a beautiful, gentle rhythm.

Ariadne is deeply drawn to music and sound. Giggling and chattering, she ran straight to the piano, sitting right beside Farhaan on the bench. She had a wonderful time pressing the keys, chattering happily to the music and feeling the deep, warm vibrations of the wood.

When she suddenly got hungry and let out a sharp cry, I quickly walked to the kitchen and got her some yoghurt and fed her, and she calmed down instantly, happily chewing while sitting on the cozy rug, playing with some of my wooden owls, giggling.

Closing: With my writing finished and the lamp glowing softly in the quiet room, I sat on my mat beside my new desk. I took a deep, slow breath, feeling the immense creative peace of my workspace. I stretched my arms wide, raised them overhead, and took a long, physical exhale. I closed my eyes, let my hands rest on my lap, and let my mind settle into the quiet, holding onto the reassuring thought that our home is complete.
