The First Glimpse of the Pyramids
My official, scholarly review of the Great Pyramids: they are remarkably large, smashing to look at, but entirely unsuited for an over-excited terrier.

Max’s Diary-Style Journal Entry
June 8th — The Desert Edge, Giza Crumbs. They really are tremendously big. We landed the aeroplane on a flat stretch of sand, and the moment the door opened, a wave of peppery heat hit us like an oven door being flung open. Before us stood the mighty Pyramids, looking very grand and ancient under a scorching golden sun. I immediately took out my magnifying glass to inspect the stones.
We have reunited with Great Aunt Cleo! She is an absolute brick of a woman who wears sturdy khaki trousers and has a booming laugh that can stop a runaway donkey. She knows everything about the physical scale of these limestone blocks, and to mark the occasion, she presented me with a magnificent golden pyramid pendant to place into my rucksack!
"Eee, they look like giant blocks of golden parkin!" Granny Maple chuckled, adjusting her sun-hat.
Tilly immediately ran toward them, giggling and shouting, "Look, Max! Giant stone triangles! If we tip them over, we could use them as ramps for my tricycle!" I gasped. It was a terrifyingly practical observation that made me worry for the safety of ancient history.
Sir Bark-A-Lot trotted ahead, wagging his tail as if he had personally built them last Tuesday. He immediately began an unauthorized digging investigation at the base of the smallest pyramid, sending a spray of golden sand straight onto my clean trousers and directly into my open inkpot. Frightfully bad manners. While I was cleaning my trousers, Tilly snuck up, raided my satchel, and added a big purple crayon drawing of a smiling mouse right onto the pyramid sketch in my diary.
This sand gets into everything.
Including my serious drawings.
Crumbs. I shall need a very large pocket handkerchief and a lock for my crayons.
