Max’s Diary-Style Journal Entry

June 10th — Aboard the Nile Felucca We are traveling south along the great Nile River on a splendid, white sailboat. We have found Granny's second sister, Aunt Rania! She is the calm, scholarly one, a wonderfully soothing presence who floats through life like a swan on a glassy lake. Her boat smells of jasmine tea and mint, and she immediately began explaining the ancient basin irrigation systems used by the pharaohs to harness the annual Nile floods. I was enthralled! To assist with my studies, she gracefully handed me a beautiful, delicate blue lotus fan to add to my growing gift collection.

"Sit quietly, my dears, and let the river speak to you," Aunt Rania said with a beautiful, quiet smile.

I was trying to do exactly that, note-taking properly in my diary about the hydrological shift of the riverbanks, when Tilly began a major rumpus. She was leaning dangerously over the wooden deck, giggling and waving wildly at a sleepy crocodile in the reeds.

"Look, Max! It's an old log with teeth! If I throw a custard cream, do you think it will do a trick?"

Before I could stop her, she leaned too far and her orange life-jacket got caught on the sailboat's rigging, leaving her dangling upside down like a strange piece of fruit! While I rushed to untangle her, Sir Bark-A-Lot decided to investigate Aunt Rania's plate of sweet date cakes. He snatched three of them off the low table, slipped on a polished rug, and skidded straight into Granny’s wicker basket, knocking over a flask of lemonade.

"Eee, that pup has more bounce than a cricket ball!" Granny laughed, quite unbothered.

This river trip was supposed to be peaceful.

Instead, it is a maritime disaster.

Crumbs. I think the crocodile is looking at my socks.

Explorer’s Notes

  • OFFICIAL LOG: Nile hydrology and basin irrigation system analysis.

  • Gift Acquired: Blue lotus fan from Aunt Rania (excellent for cooling overheated scholars).

  • Tilly's Observation: "Max, if crocodiles are green, why aren't they made of grass?" (A deeply concerning thought process).
