The Gathering Storm of Packing

Max’s Journal Entry

June 5th — Granny’s Sitting Room, Pickleberry Falls Something extraordinary has happened! We were having what I thought was a perfectly proper, quiet afternoon because it was raining cats and dogs outside. I was just about to take a magnificent bite of Granny’s warm apple pie when the peace was completely shattered.

Granny Maple bustled over to her wicker basket, brought out an old red photo album, and flipped it open to pictures of her sisters standing by giant stone monuments under a scorching sun.

"Pack your hats, my dears!" she suddenly cried with a merry twinkle in her eye. "We are off to Egypt to find them!"

Well! Tilly was so shocked she gave a massive leap and nearly fell straight off her velvet armchair, and I startled so badly I almost dropped my delicious slice of pie right onto the rug—which would have been an absolute tragedy.

Now the house is in a total state of chaos. We are trying to pack our trunks, but Admiral Whiskers has decided my leather suitcase is his new naval headquarters and refuses to move. Tilly is running about giggling hysterically, trying to pack a giant pink kite and fourteen packets of custard creams. She has already managed to inspect my secret diary with sticky strawberry-jam fingers, leaving a massive pink thumbprint on my clean table of contents. Frightful girl! Meanwhile, Sir Bark-A-Lot is barking furiously at a roll of brown packing tape and has chewed through my spare measuring tape. Egypt! I am quite certain the sand is terribly bad for one's spectacles.

This sounds mysterious.

Also slightly concerning.

Crumbs. I had better sharpen my pencil. The Sparkly Expedition may be starting sooner than expected!

Explorer’s Notes

OFFICIAL LOG: KEEP OUT! These notes are for the eyes of proper scholars only. No giggling allowed. If found, return to Max at once — or face a frightful bother!

  • Current Location: Granny’s sitting room (currently buried under tissue paper and half-packed trunks).

  • Tilly’s Muddle: "Sand is just tiny biscuits that haven't been baked yet, Max!" (An incredibly un-scientific observation that makes me worry about her schooling).

  • Pie Status: Heroically saved from hitting the floor and safely eaten. An absolute brick of a performance by myself.
