Max’s Diary-Style Journal Entry
June 11th — The Khan el-Khalili Bazaar This afternoon was an absolute muddle of colours, sounds, and terrifying smells. We met Granny's third sister, Aunt Jasmine! She is the explosive, joyful one, a complete whirlwind of silver bells, bright silken scarves, and endless songs.
"Let us celebrate the market, my little explorers!" she cheered, clapping her hands. She presented Tilly with a gorgeous lapis lazuli bracelet that glittered splendidly. For me, she brought out a magnificent box of warm baklava, declaring it a "sweet memory" for my collection.
Tilly was completely beside herself with excitement, clanging her new bracelet against everything, giggling, and waving wildly at the shopkeepers. Suddenly, she stopped, looked at a massive carpet hanging from a wall, and said, "Max, if that carpet can fly, it doesn't need a timetable because it already knows where the wind goes." I stared at her, completely baffled. It was an alarmingly deep remark about aerodynamics and geography for an eight-and-a-half-year-old, and it worried me immensely.
Then, the true disaster occurred. Sir Bark-A-Lot decided to conduct a close-range inspection of a towering pyramid of pure black pepper. He gave a massive, rhythmic sneeze—WUFF-CHOO!—which sent a spectacular cloud of pepper straight into the air. Within seconds, all the shoppers, the merchants, and Aunt Jasmine were sneezing in unison. It was a frightful business. I had to use my pocket handkerchief three times.
This is a culinary disaster.
My eyes are watering.
Crumbs. Sir Bark-A-Lot is still sneezing in the key of G.
